Lois Hole Campus Alberta Digital Library

The University of Lethbridge Library is one of four Albertan university libraries that received funds from the Lois Hole Campus Alberta Digital Library (LHCADL) to establish a digitization program. The LHCADL is an initiative established by the Alberta Government, funded by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, and managed and delivered by The Alberta Library. It was created in 2005 as a legacy to the late, the Honourable Lois Hole to continue her vision of greater learning opportunities for all Albertans.

Goals of the Digitization Program

The twin goals of the LHCADL digitization program are to:

  1. digitize materials of importance to Albertans
  2. to create electronic repositories to manage and preserve born-digital Alberta content.

In order to meet these goals, the University of Lethbridge Library's digitization team has worked with The Alberta Library and representatives from the other three university libraries to coordinate efforts.

Selection, Digitization, & Description of Materials

In partnership with local community stakeholders, the University of Lethbridge Library identifies materials for digitization which are of particular significance to Southern Alberta and Southern Albertans. Recent examples have included archival issues of the Lethbridge Herald newspaper (1905-1955), maps of Southern Alberta from the Galt Museum & Archives, and historic photographs from the Magee Family Collection. Each of these identified collections were acquired, digitized, described and made freely available on the World Wide Web using specialized digital library software.
