Distinguishing Characteristics

  • A genre of speculative fiction, which creates an alternative universe existing on laws different than our own.
  • Fantasy is often rooted in traditional literature, but has an identifiable author.
  • In general, stories involve magic, the "quest," and/or "good versus evil."
  • There are many sub-genres: animal fantasy, quest fantasy, toy and doll fantasy etc.
  • Pure fantasy transports us to a different universe all together, but many subsets of fantasy bring magical elements into an otherwise realistic setting (Magical Realism).
  • Magical Realism is popular with young readers because they can see themselves in imaginative and exciting ways.
