- Sometimes written as a series based on the same detectives.
- Can have varying degrees of suspense.
- Overlaps with contemporary realistic fiction when well-developed characters and meaningful life circumstances are included.
- Overlaps with paranormal or fantasy fiction when ghosts, horror or magic are included.
