Distinguishing Characteristics

  • Very versatile. Many aimed at younger audiences, but not all. 
  • Can start a conversation at any grade level across disciplines. 
  • Text and illustration are fused together, to provide more than either can do alone. 
  • May be narrative as well as conceptual, wordless, informational and biographical books. 
  • Authors and illustrators frequently experiment with new styles. 
  • Standard Length is 32 pages, but may vary from 28-48. 
  • Many good picture books are available online and can be projected to the group (visit our Literature page).
