EndNote: Install EndNote

A guide to using EndNote at the University of Lethbridge

How do I install EndNote?

Some things to consider before you begin:

  1. We recommend that you remove previous versions of EndNote before updating to the current version to allow for a clean, trouble-free installation of the software. Doing so will also prevent you from using earlier versions of EndNote to edit (and possibly corrupt) any EndNote libraries you may already have created.
  2. Also before installing, make sure you close all Word processing applications and all Microsoft Office applications.
  3. When you download EndNote for your use, you will be asked to agree to the terms of the University of Lethbridge site license and to validate your relationship with the University by entering your username and password.
  4. You will be downloading a zipped (compressed) file containing an EndNote software package licensed only for University of Lethbridge users.
  5. After installing EndNote, open the application and check for updates (Windows: under Help; Mac: under EndNote 21) to ensure you are working with the most up-to-date version of EndNote.

*PC users please note: After downloading the zipped installation file

  • double-click the zipped file
  • click Extract all at the top of the window

  • click Extract at the bottom of the new window

  • Double-click EN21Inst in the window containing your extracted files

  • You should now be able to run the installation.

Download the EndNote install file now.

Problems installing on a Windows computer?

Some Windows users may find the installation process hangs toward the end when EndNote tries to install the Direct Web Export Helper.  If this happens to you, here's what to do:

  • Cancel the installation process. You may have to go to Task Manager (CTRL - ALT - Delete), select Windows installer, and click End task.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Locate your extracted installation file and start the installation process again.
  • At the Select Installation Type screen, choose Custom and click Next.

  • At the Select Features screen, at the bottom of the screen uncheck "Install Direct Export Helper"

  • Click Next and complete the rest of the installation.
  • After the installation process is finished, download the Direct Web Export Helper file (Risxtd.exe) available here and save it to the EndNote program folder. For most users the EndNote program folder will be located at Local Disk (C:) > Program Files (x86) > EndNote 21

Installing for the first time?

If you plan to use the EndNote desktop app on a computer that had an older installed version of EndNote, the new installation process will likely retain the Library's proxy server address and login information from the previous version - these are needed to use EndNote's Find Full Text option.   But if you are installing EndNote 21 on your computer for the first time, you may have to add this information manually.  Here are the steps to take.

Find Full Text

After installing the EndNote desktop app, open the program.  Then

  • on a PC, go to Edit | Preferences
  • on a Mac, go to EndNote | Preferences
