"Dropbox is a home for all your photos, docs, videos, and files. Anything you add to Dropbox will automatically show up on all your computers, phones and even the Dropbox website — so you can access your stuff from anywhere. Dropbox also makes it super easy to share with others, whether you're a student or professional, parent or grandparent."

What's the Research-Related Purpose?

To utilize cloud storage of files which then allows the user to access this data from the Internet.
To store and share large files (i.e., those which exceed email size quotas) with colleagues and research collaborators.

Additional Information:

Dropbox provides a limited amount of cloud-based storage for free with account creation. Additional storage can be purchased.
Note that storage is likely outside of Canada and therefore not suitable for sensitive data.
