What is a Scholarly Source?

Scholarly sources are also referred to as academic, peer reviewed, or refereed sources.  Key characteristics of scholarly sources:

  • authored by scholars and professionals who are experts in their fields.
  • original research, or reviews and analyses of others' research.
  • often undergo the peer review process prior to publication.
  • generally refers to articles published in journals for an audience of those doing research (but can be books)

What is Peer Review?

How can I determine whether a particular journal is peer reviewed?

The database called UlrichsWeb classifies whether journals are refereed (aka peer reviewed) or not.

8 STEPS

1. The first step is to open University of Lethbridge Library Homepage and click Databases

2. Click By Title

3. Click U from the A-Z list

4. Scroll down and click UlrichsWeb

5. Click Basic search, enter your search terms

6. Review results to find the journal you're looking for. This symbol is a referee jersy and means the journal is peer-reviewed (aka refereed).
